Mean Seafood is a cookbook aimed to inspire more at-home cooking by men. The majority of people who work in the kitchens are men, yet domestic cooking is still primarily done by women. This cookbook addresses the lack of tailored and approachable resources for this demographic and hopes to inspire this change at home. Mean Seafood is designed with a “masculine” feel, using dark colours and gritty collaged layouts that are inspired by kitchen elements, adding texture, depth, and a tactile quality. The spiral binding allows the book to be spread flat and ensures durability. The smaller size provides ease of transportation and storage.

This project was a little outside of my usual style as I wanted to experiment with something new and grittier. I interviewed people who worked in the kitchen to build the visual language. After collecting all of the random tape and sticker elements it was a lot of fun to collage them together alongside the photos. I really enjoy the tactile quality and the small details and accidents in the various elements. It was fun to work with such a different persona than myself. My dad and brother are both into cooking. All of the recipes are original (and I ate all the food after taking photos).
