This project aims to use typographic iterations to explore the lyrics of "Part of the Band" by The 1975. The work pairs black and white photography with text compositions creating a interplay between letterforms and shades of gray. The final deliverable is a set of 5.5 x 10 inch double sided cards designed for print. The compositions showcase a fusion of distinct linguistic, typographic, and conceptual principles. This includes: explorations that accentuate formal type principles - influencing our perception of text, explorations which emphasize the mechanics of type - shaping our reading experience and explorations interpreting the lyrical content - influencing our understanding of the text. To complement these, I created a series of black and white photographs using a double exposure effect, resulting in moody visuals that undergo intimate shifting transformations and tell a story alongside the distorted lyrics.

This expressive type project allowed me to experiment with different possibilities at a new level. It was fun to break out of structured rules and deliver a piece of work that feels more unbounded in a strange way. Unlike my usual informative and structured approach to type, this project offered a cool alternative. It provided an intriguing lens through which to understand a song on a deeper level, like a visual annotation of sorts. I feel like it opened my mind to new possibilities with type and has also inspired me to work with more type-dominant designs in the future.
